A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE CIVIC AND CHARITABLE SERVICE OF PASTOR JERRY YOUNG OF NEW HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH.

WHEREAS, Pastor Jerry Young's commitment to God and to His church has manifested itself in dedicated civic and charitable service on all levels: local, state and national; and

WHEREAS, Pastor Young is a native of Scott, Mississippi, is the son of Reverend and Mrs. I.L. Young of Greenville, Mississippi, is a graduate of Nugent Center High School in Bolivar County, earned an Associate Arts Degree in Social Science from Coahoma Junior College in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and a bachelor's degree from Rust College, Holly Springs, Mississippi, and a Master of Divinity Degree and his Doctor of Ministry Degree from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, he began his service in the ministry at the Mt. Tenniea Baptist Church in Lamont, Mississippi, served as pastor of the St. John and the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Churches of Greenville, Mississippi, and has prayerfully and faithfully served the membership of the New Hope Baptist Church since February 1980; and

WHEREAS, Pastor Young has served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Baptist Seminary as well as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Bi-racial Baptist Commission, served the Seminary as a consultant in Evangelism, Leadership Development and Church Administration and an instructor in Homiletics, and serves on the Seminary Ministerial Advisory Board; and

WHEREAS, active in the community, Pastor Young has served on the Mayor's Community and Economic Development Commission, the Planning Board for the City of Jackson, as Chairman of the "Family" Sub-committee of the Mayor's Special Committee on Partnership Against Crime, serves on the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities, serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the New Hope Alcohol and Drug Three Quarter Way House in Jackson, and serves on the Board of Trustees at Belhaven College; and

WHEREAS, Pastor Young is very active in his state convention, presently serving as President of the General Missionary Baptist State Convention of Mississippi, Inc., and nationally works with the Evangelism Board of the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc., and serves as a seminar leader in the Sunday School and NBC Administrators Division of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education; and

WHEREAS, Jerry is married to the former Helen Louise Akins of Starkville, Mississippi and they are the parents of two daughters, Jerien Louise and Kelli Elizabeth; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the dedication of this community leader:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend the civic and charitable service of Pastor Jerry Young of New Hope Baptist Church, Jackson, Mississippi, and wish him continued success in his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Pastor Jerry Young and his family, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
